Who are Helicam Services?

Based out of our offices in the North West of England we provide quick, safe, secure and cost effective solutions to aerial imagery across the UK and Ireland.

We have commercial UAV operators in most major cities across Britain which allows us to offer our clients a fully integrated national services with quick turn around times, a single point of contact and above all a consistent high quality product.

Due to the wide variety of locations and industries we shoot, all our operators carry CSCS cards are First Aid trained and are DBS checked.

What are commercial UAV operators?

A commercial UAV operator is an individual who is insured and licensed by the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) to fly UAV’s aka drones commercially in the UK.  This license is called a PfCO (Permissions for Commercial Operations) and is renewed each year.

In order to obtain a PfCO the operator needs to undertake a certified course to learn about the law and legislation regarding UAV’s and needs to pass both a written and practical a competency test.

On passing the course they will need to write an operations manual to show their safe operating practices and procedures, and have the manual passed by the CAA.

What height and distance can you fly?

As a general rule, legally in the UK you can fly a maximum height of 400ft (122m) above the ground (take off point) and 500m away from the operator (1km radius).  These distances can vary depending on the location but line of sight must be kept at all times.

Can you fly near airports and built up areas?

Operating near airports and built up areas is possible with the correct permissions and planning.  Helicam Services are well versed in gaining these permissions but they can sometimes affect how quickly we can carry out the job and can sometimes come with some restrictions.

Each flight comes with its own unique challenges but these can normally be ironed out during the pre-flight planning stage and will be discussed with you prior to us proceeding with the job.

Does rain and wind affect your work?

Technically no.  The majority of our UAV’s can fly in winds of up to 22mph with some also being water resistant, although these conditions aren’t ideal for producing crisp / clear images.

Where possible our jobs are planned around the weather conditions which we monitor on the run up to each shoot.
